Commercializing Small-Scale Fish Farming in Tanzania

Fish is an essential and affordable source of nutrition in Tanzania, yet small-scale fish farmers continue to face significant barriers, such as limited access to quality inputs, technical knowledge, finance, and reliable markets. This project aims to strengthen the entire tilapia value chain by supporting small-scale producers to adopt more sustainable, climate‑resilient and commercially oriented farming practices.

About the project

The project takes place in Ifakara in Kilombero District, an area well suited for land-based aquaculture due to reliable water sources, suitable soils, and strong local interest. Here, farmers will be supported to transition from subsistence production to a more structured and market-oriented model. They will receive training in sustainable and climate-resilient farming practices, fish health, pond management, business planning and marketing. Access to quality feed, fingerlings and other inputs will be facilitated through a coordinated system that reduces costs and strengthens commercial viability. Farmers will also be linked to growing markets within and beyond the region, helping ensure predictable demand and better prices.

A new aquaculture hub will serve as the center for training, extension support, input distribution and sales coordination. It will also strengthen collaboration between farmers, service providers and market actors, and help secure a more professional and reliable value chain. To support long-term sector growth, the project will contribute to the development of a modern hatchery that provides consistent access to high-quality fingerlings, while also functioning as a training and demonstration site.

Women and youth will play an active role in the value chain through targeted support that increases their ability to participate and benefit equally.

To secure lasting impact, the project includes close collaboration with national aquaculture institutions and sector associations to improve policy implementation, strengthen regulatory clarity and promote wider awareness of the benefits of farmed tilapia. By improving both the enabling environment and the practical conditions for small-scale farming, the project supports a more resilient, nutritious and economically viable food system for communities across Tanzania.
