Agricultural college in Kosovo

Practical training in running a farm at an agricultural college on the outskirts of Kosovo’s capital city has contributed to educating a generation of young people who missed out on their education during the civil war in the former Yugoslavia.

Project background

At the end of the 1990s, after a decade of war-like conditions in Kosovo, there was a desperate need to provide training in agricultural techniques for a whole generation of young people who had missed out on their education.

The Norwegian foreign service therefore supported the Norwegian Red Cross when in 1999 they began work on their LLL project  (“Lifelong Learning - Agricultural Education and Advisory Service in Symbiosis with Ordinary Secondary Education (LLL)”) at the Adem Gllavica agricultural college outside Lipjan, just under 10 miles south of the capital city, Pristina. Later, CARE Norge assumed this responsibility, before in 2003 the Royal Norwegian Society for Development took over. The Royal Norwegian Society for Development had this responsibility until the formal transfer to the Lipjan public authorities in 2010.

About the project

The Royal Norwegian Society for Development’s responsibilities have consisted of enabling the practical running of the farm through the transfer of a broad range of necessary and up-to-date knowledge of everything from operational planning, building techniques, feeding and animal husbandry to appropriate handling of products. In addition, a new and modern freestall barn has been erected, all animal buildings have been renovated, a large teaching building with classrooms has been built, and there is a good selection of appropriate agricultural tools for teaching purposes.

It has also been important to work on high-standard processing of farm products such as milk, fruit and meat. Teaching includes instruction on the strict hygiene requirements specified by EU standards, and the farm’s popular products are sold in the college’s farm shop.
